MAKE YOUR HUNTING TRIP AN UNFORGETTABLE SUCCESS

So … you’ve booked or are considering booking your 2009 hunting trip with Bear Mountain Ranch. You couldn’t have chosen a better location than Bear Mountain Ranch, home to an abundance of elk, mule deer, pronghorn and a myriad of other wildlife. Whether you’ve chosen an free range hunt or a trophy hunt on our private Preserve, you’re in for an experience of a lifetime. Together, the Bear Mountain Ranch team has almost 100 years of guiding and hunting expertise. True lovers of the outdoors, the animals and the hunting experience, the team has some great tips to ensure your hunting trip will be everything you’ve always imagined.

Before you even go, there are a few things you need to consider. It may sound trivial, but this is actually a crucial element to your hunting gear: make sure you get yourself some good footwear. Purchase boots that will provide you with traction on the terrain; waterproofing is a necessity. Make sure they provide adequate support (especially for your ankles) and are comfortable, as you’ll be wearing them for several hours at a time.

Another thing you really don’t want to skimp on when you’re hunting is quality optics. You’ll need to see long distances in sometimes less-than-optimum conditions in early morning or near dusk. Get the best pair of binoculars and rifle scope you can afford—you won’t regret it.

Make sure you choose a trip that is compatible with your physical abilities. Several months before your trip, start some physical conditioning; the shape you’re in can greatly affect the outcome of a hunt. Work out at a gym, get in some aerobics, run or climb a Stairmaster to build up that stamina! While on the trip, pace yourself. Make sure you know your limitations and communicate those with your guide from the onset of your trip.

One other thing before you head out into the wild—PRACTICE with your rifle or bow. Spend your last few practice sessions in your full hunting gear, including your safety harness—which will reveal any clearance problems that you can correct prior to your trip. Also make sure you find the right load for your rifle. Different loads produce different trajectory paths and you are likely to find that your accuracy will be lost over longer distances if this has not been reset.

While on your trip, make sure to maintain a respect for the land, the wildlife and for others. Balanced use of natural resources is increasingly at risk these days; recreational hunting seems especially vulnerable. Like many outfitters, we at Bear Mountain Ranch advocate an ethic of sharing in all users of the outdoors to preserve all legitimate use options and promote responsible, shared and balanced use of natural resources.

Above all, the Bear Mountain Ranch team urges you to listen to your guide—your safety depends on it! Let our years of experience be put to good use. You can learn from us; we know the land—as well as the game animals on it—better than anyone. We work hard and are accustomed to dealing with a variety of hunters, from the absolutely inexperienced to veterans. We are dedicated to do everything possible to ensure you have a memorable experience. It’s what our reputation is built on. Day in and day out, we’ll be making decisions to make your hunt a success. Sometimes it may seem confusing, but trust that we know what we’re doing and be open to listening. You hired us for our ability to make these fine-tuned decisions, so don’t fight them. Don’t be afraid to ask questions—there are no “dumb” ones! Spend time talking to us and have a list of questions written down to make sure you get all the information you need. It’s definitely better to ask too many questions than not enough.
